What Is a Professional Coach?

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Coach? I believe most would think of a sports coach. A person that teaches you how to play a sport like basketball or train for a marathon.  Let me introduce you to a new way to think of coaching:  the Professional Coach.

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as, “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”  So, exactly how does a professional coach go about doing that?

First, coaches are trained to listen and observe and then to adapt their approach to the individual client’s needs. Why listening and observing?  Coaching starts with the client as a naturally creative and resourceful individual. The coaching process is about client self-discovery and client-generated strategies to realize their potential.

Then the coach’s job is to provide the means to enhance the skills and creativity that the client already possesses. The process concentrates on where individuals are now, what they are willing to do to get where they want to be, and provide tactics and strategies to guide the individual on their path.

And finally, coaches hold the client accountable for accomplishing the goals they have set for themselves.  The coach is there to support their client and give honest and open assessments on their client’s progress. The coach succeeds when the client succeeds, and client success comes when they own their process and are true to themselves.

As a professional coach, I use a variety of techniques and incorporate a holistic approach with my clients.  I believe in positive psychology:  the understanding of what makes life worth living; learning what is valuable to each client that makes their lives fulfilling.  This underlying philosophy is then coupled with assessments such as StrengthFinders, techniques like the classic SWOT analysis, and other methods, giving my clients a broad range of tools to optimize their potential.

So now when you hear the word Coach, I hope that you think of more than you had before. Coaches not just for the field or court but coaches for life.
